Not too long ago I stumbled across an interesting Tableau that a fan posted on LinkedIn. It was pretty good so I thought that I would share it. This one has a great overview of relevant statistics covering the history of the sport. Everything is presented well and the creator certainly thought the whole thing through. The image is kinda big so if you want to download it, be ready for a 17 MB file.
There are a few errors in it though. Since I am a bit pedantic, I’ll list them here:
- 1975 – The advent of turbocharged engines came two years later with the Renault RS01 and it’s 1.5 L turbocharged V6 unit.
- 1988 – This is when the first turbocharged era came to an end. From 1977-1988, most teams ran turbocharged engines. However, in 1987 the rules were changed to make normally-aspirated 3.5 L engines more competitive. For the 1989 season, turbocharged engines were banned.
- 1991 – As stated above, this era began two years before. Most were V8s but some manufacturers opted for V10s while others went with V12s. The initial power output was between 580-600 BHP but by 1991 this had increased to nearly 700 BHP.
- 2018 – This should be 2014 because that is when the turbo hybrid era began. V6s were the mandated configuration coupled with both KERS and ERS for energy recovery. The combined output from the engine and battery could reach nearly 1000 BHP.
- He transposed Jack Brabham’s information with Jackie Stewart.
- He also transposed Niki Lauda’s information with Nelson Piquet.
Certainly a great presentation of F1-related information. It shows what is possible with contemporary design tools combined with some professional layout skills. Take a look for yourself.
